Lighting and Tech

From fitting lights to making sure they are turned on and off at the right time, plus music and effects, the tech team are an essential part of our productions.
South Brent Village Hall has an extensive lighting rig and a dedicated lighting control room high above the audience, so we are able to make great use of lighting and effects.
What’s involved?
Every show requires a lighting scheme to be designed and rigged up, and we usually use computer-controlled lights which need to be programmed. The stage needs to be lit to suit the atmosphere of each scene, making sure that all the cast can be seen wherever they need to be. The tech team also controls recorded music and special effects.
Typical tasks are:
- Liaising with the director, producer and set designer to design appropriate lighting
- Hiring lights and effects
- Rigging up and taking down lights
- Designing and programming lighting scenes
- Operating the lights during performances
What experience do you need?
None: SBADS is a great place to learn stagecraft; though we welcome anyone with experience too.
What skills do you need?
It’s really important to know that we don’t require experts – though they are always welcome! Our current team have all learned ‘on the job’!
Any or all of these skills are useful:
- Working at height
- Programming DMX controllers
- Operating computer software
- Electrical wiring
- Splicing audio
- Project planning
