Music and Choreography

SBADS was founded by a dance band leader, and music and dance can play important roles in our productions.

We rarely produce song-and-dance spectaculars, but music plays an important part in all our productions to set the scene and provide atmosphere, whilst our regular pantos require a lot of choreography and music. We use a mix of live music and pre-recorded tracks.

What’s involved?

What is required varies from show to show, and is often determined by the skills and time available.

Most shows require music to open and close acts and/or scenes, which may be provided by musicians in the hall or tracks that have been mixed and edited. Pantomimes have had anything from a solo pianist to a ‘house band’, and often require performers and music to be matched musically.

Pantomimes also require the most choreography, with both large-cast numbers and individual or small group pieces being choreographed, often with a cast with little or no dance experience.

Typical tasks are:

  • Liasing with the director to determine the extent of choreogrpahy and music
  • Finding appropriate music
  • Finding pre-recorded tracks and editing them
  • Finding musicians and rehearsing with them
  • Developing dance routines
  • Teaching routines to the cast and rehearsing

What experience do you need?

No formal experience in theatrical music or choreography is required, but it is obviously useful.

What skills do you need?

Any or all of these skills are useful:

  • Rhythm and musicality
  • Ability to play an instrument and/or read music
  • Editing music tracks
  • Able to follow choreography and create original dance sequences
  • Time management
  • Attention to detail
  • Collaboration skills
  • Team leadership
  • Teaching skills
  • Knowledge of theatre
