Back stage crew

Our stage crew work invisible magic and make each production run like clockwork. It’s a great way to be involved on stage if you don’t want to appear in the spotlight.

In every scene, actors walk onto the stage as if everything has always been there: but it often takes swift work between scenes to get everything in the right place at the right time, and the stage crew make it all happen. They are a crucial part of every performance, and it’s a rewarding role where you get to see the magic of the theatre close-up.

What’s involved?

The stage crew, led by the Stage Manager and Assistant Stage Manager, get the stage ready for each performance – and some of the rehearsals – and are responsible for shifting scenery and props safely and on time. It’s worth noting that some roles are safety-critical.

Typical tasks are:

  • Operating the curtains
  • Raising and lowering backdrops
  • Moving scenery and props
  • Operating mechanical effects, pyrotechnics and contraptions
  • Spot sound effects
  • Making sure the cast are on stage at the right time

What experience do you need?

Although having worked back stage before is useful, it’s not essential: SBADS is a great place to learn stagecraft.

What skills do you need?

  • Good general fitness, because the role often involves lifting, bending and climbing ladders
  • Patience – there could be long periods of time spent waiting for scene changes
  • The ability to work quickly at busy times
  • Teamwork skills
  • Flexibility
  • The ability to work in dim light

It is useful to have practical skills and perhaps some basic carpentry or DIY skills to fix problems on stage during the performances.
