One hundred years of drama in South Brent
“On Boxing Day and again on Monday night the church hall, South Brent, was crowded on the occasion of Mr Arthur Manning presenting his operetta entitled ‘The Beauty and the Beast’ “– The Totnes Times
Our very first production was a pantomime in 1925, and South Brent Amateur Dramatic Society began our hundredth year with another magical pantomime, ‘Cinderella‘, at the same hall, now known as the Village Hall.
In celebration of our pantos past, We held a display of pantomime pictures and posters from our archives at the Old School Community Centre in South Brent throughout January, and a second exhibition in July.
Our second production of the year was “A Bunch of Amateurs” by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman, which was staged from 15 to 17 May.
SBADS has also held a series of events both for our members and the whole village, including a whole week of Midsummer Fun from 21st June. We were feeling the loss of some of the events that made up Carnival Week, so we decided to bring some of them back for one year only!
- Saturday 21 June: Village Fun Day at Palstone Park, with games, sideshows, teas and races
- Sunday 22 June: Cricket Competition
- Monday 23 June: Killer Skittles competition
- Tuesday 24 June: Fun Bingo at the Village Hall
- Wednesday 25 June: Film night at the Village Hall
- Thursday 26 June: Treasure Hunt
- Friday 27 June: Fun Run
Our third production of the year was a youth theatre event, “The Cyclops (of South Brent)” on 11 October.
We’ll be putting on a fourth production in November, as we bring back a play we first performed in 1944: “The Ghost Train” by Arnold Ridley, from 20 to 22 November – spookily, it will be almost 100 years to the day since its first west-end performance.
We hope that you’ll join us in celebrating 100 years of drama in South Brent.
As we sang in the panto:
And we’ve performed a hundred yearsAnd we’ll perform a hundred moreJust to be the group that brings the dramaRight here to your village hall!
