‘On Air’ is a celebration of radio drama with two very different pieces presented as if the audience is watching a live radio broadcast.

The first programme is ‘Red Mullet’ by John Parker. Although never broadcast on air, it is an homage to a certain style of radio adventure drama going back to the dawn of the wireless. Set in a future Kansas City metropolis, it is a comedic action hero adventure drawing in every cliché it could possibly bump into.

The second piece is one of the most highly awarded radio dramas ever produced. ‘Cigarettes and Chocolate’, by Anthony Minghella, is virtually a period piece as it is set in the late ’80s in a world on the way to becoming what it is today. It explores the impact among a circle of friends when one of them, inexplicably, decides to stop speaking and the vacuum of her silence is filled by the oversharing voices of her friends.

The beautiful nuanced, humorous and naturalistic writing paints a moving picture of friendships, grief, love, loss, social conscience, aspiration and disappointment.

The evening will be presented with cabaret-style table seating, with seats allocated on arrival.
