Dancing At Lughnasa – Brian Friel

Based in 1936 in County Donegal, Ireland, the play tells the story of the five Mundy sisters and the two male members of the family, Father Jack their brother, and Michael, one of the sisters 7 year old sons. The story is narrated by Michael as a grown up man and there is a sense that the close home life the women/girls have known since childhood is about to be torn apart.

In this play Brian Friel evokes not just the interior landscape of a group of people trapped in their domestic situation but the wider exterior landscape, Christian and Pagan, of which they are a part.
